DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY

Year of establishment: 1993

Vision:

Our vision is to conduct innovative research, teaching, and outreach on the patterns and processes of life with a focus on plants and meet the global needs by educating students to excel in botany with the human touch.  

Mission  

  • To offer wide and relevant education to the students with a view of shaping their scientific temperament and environmental awareness and to uplift the students capable of facing challenges in life efficiently and carve their own future. 
  • To conserve the threatened and endangered plants species by establishing a Botanical garden in a college campus and it’s  access to all the nearby institutions and public for understanding the natural world and building awareness among the people for biodiversity conservation through education and display 
  • To introduce students to modern ideas and thoughts for sustaining in the global world 
  • To nurture ground for creative excellence in medicinal plants, plant propagation, and landscaping.  To impart quality education in the fields of Botany to make the students acquire an in-depth knowledge relevant to local, regional and national needs 
  • To provide a professional atmosphere that is unique in the sense that is fast-paced and exciting with the faculty deemed to facilitate a motivating, comfortable and positive academic impression. 
  • To produce proficient, professionally competent and socially responsible individuals with a deep sense of moral values and personal qualities and to help them achieve their academic goals in a creative and positive way.

Botanical Garden.

The Department of Botany is maintaining Botanical Garden endowed with a rich collection of plant species. we are conserving 270 plant species belonging to 70 families. Separate sections are allotted for forest trees, Medicinal plants, fruits Yielding Plants, Aquatic plants and desert plants. Rare and endemic plants such as Pterocarpus santalinus, Boswellia ovalifolia, Hildegardia Populifolia etc are conserving. Important medicinal plants such as Asparagus racimosus, Gymnema sylvestre, Justicia adhatoda, Santlum album, Tinospora cordifolia, Terminalia chebula  are also conserving in our Botanical garden. Several good quality wood yielding plants such as Swietenia mahogany, Gmelina arborea, Hardwickia binata, Terminalia bellirica, Terminalia arjuna.etc are growing in our Botanical garden. Apart from this several aquatic plants such as Nymphaea, Nelumbo, Pistia, Salvinia, Hydrilla are growing in our Botanical Garden.

We are maintaining departmental nursery in which so many ornamental plant saplings are grown in disposed  plastic articles such as glasses, bottles, covers, and cans, etc.

We provide public access to our Botanical Garden to nearby colleges such as STBC Degree college, Sai Krishna Degree college, KVR Govt. College for Women(A) and Institution of Advanced Studies in Education (IASE) brings their students to know about various plants.
